How to freelance
Have you started to receive interest in your creative work whilst studying at UAL? Do you want to know more about working on paid projects or contracts or how to develop a freelance practice when you graduate?
How to freelance is a new series of practical sessions, brought to you by Careers and Employability from February to June 2018. The five sessions will cover everything you need to consider when starting out as a creative freelancer, including: essential information on setting up, finding clients and work, successfully promoting what you do and taking care of your finances.
Our Enterprise Practitioner will take you through all aspects of running a successful freelancing practice and industry guest speakers (including FreelancersClub.com and UAL alumni) will provide vital insights into how they manage and sustain their freelance work, as well as top tips for those starting out.
The sessions will cover:
Setting up - how to register as self-employed and pay tax/ learn about expenses
Finding work - how to find and approach clients plus networking
Marketing - how to present and promote what you do (online and offline)
Managing your finances: how to price your work and get paid.
We’ll work from real-life examples, case study insights and you’ll also get easy-to-use templates and useful links and top tips.
The five sessions will run across five months and ideally you would attend each to get a full spectrum and start putting what you’re learning into action. There’ll also be an opportunity for some of the group to receive tailored one-to-ones on their practice with a freelancing expert. The sessions will be held at not just a shop on the following dates:
